Unlocking Compensation for Modern Slavery and Labour Exploitation

This story is part of a series highlighting the impact of FIND’s work across its five core practice areas. This story highlights pro bono work done for the Work Rights Centre from 2025 under FIND’s Fair Labour pillar.

“The team at FIND have been an invaluable ally in our efforts to support victims of labour exploitation to access employment justice. Too often, unscrupulous companies defy the law, the judges, and the workers they owe thousands to, by hiding their assets and dodging enforcement. With FIND in our corner, our message is now clear: you won't be getting away with it.”

With the funds raised through our 5th Year Anniversary Campaign, FIND has been able to provide pro bono investigative support to Work Rights Centre, a charity that helps migrants and disadvantaged Britons access employment justice and improve their social mobility.

Our support has strengthened the charity’s legal actions to secure compensation for survivors of modern slavery and labour exploitation. Compensation is vital. It enables survivors to rebuild their lives, reduces vulnerability to re-trafficking, supports reintegration, and holds traffickers to account.

To date, we have gathered evidence for Work Rights Centre in three cases taken to the Employment Tribunal: two on behalf of survivors of modern slavery, and one on behalf on an individual affected by labour exploitation through the government’s Health and Care Worker visa scheme. FIND provided intelligence on respondents’ assets, including the identification of concealed property, to support enforcement.

AB v E&J Foods Limited and Mohammed Elias Ebrahim
This modern slavery case is now in the enforcement phase. The Tribunal awarded £54,620 in compensation to the survivor, who had been paid £5 per hour while working in a shop where she was subjected to sexual abuse.

This second modern slavery case remains ongoing. An interim relief order of just over £7,500 has been recovered after enforcement action, and the order provides for continuing monthly payments of approximately £2,730 (which may require enforcement).

Labour Exploitation Claim
In this third case, the Tribunal ordered the respondents to pay the Work Rights Centre’s legal costs to represent a survivor of labour exploitation. With FIND’s asset tracing support, the charity successfully enforced and recovered the order.
